[SUPER MARIO BROTHERS DX]

What this is:

In this archive are three IPS format patch files. If applied correctly
to the proper version of the Super Mario Brothers ROM for NES or FamiCom,
you will have exactly the same game you started with, but with more color
and much smoother artwork.

Files:

MarioDX.ips -The new patch, the good one
MarioDXa.ips -The previous release version
MarioDX.txt -This file. You're reading it.

History:

I started this project in September of 1997, when I was dissapointed with the
quality of most of the "hacks" out there. I set out only to make a simple
hack for my own personal use. Even so, I didn't feel comfortable using
tiles from another SMB hack. That's why I copied all the tiles from SMB3
myself, by hand, using several sheets of graph paper. Nifty tools like
TileLayer didn't exist yet. The rest of the tiles were either created by
altering the original SMB tiles, or by drawing them myself. When I first
declared the peice "finished" in November of 1997, it had no color changes
from the original, but I was very pleased. It was not released to the public.

I decided to release it as part of a pack of NES ROM hacks called the "Super
Mario Bucket", but I never got around to it. I eventually decided to re-work
the colors, and change even more of the sprites. I've noticed that when most
people try to outline thier Koopa Troopas, they choose white as the color to
omit in favor of black, for the outline. This means their Koopas have yellow
eyes, and I can't stand that. I have chosen instead to omit the orange-yellow
that was previously the skin color. This is just one of the many things I
have done differently than the authors of other SMB1 -> SMB3/world hacks. I
hope the end result looks as good to you as it does to me.

The "final" version, and first public version of the project was released
on September 2, 1999, exclusively to Zophar's Domain. There were only a few
minor flaws that I noticed in this version, and largely thanks to sl1me, I've
fixed a few of them. Hopefully this really will be the final version.

Original Features:

Mario sprites based on SMB3

Most enemies are nearly identical to SMB3

Mushroom Retainers based on Toad from SMB2 American

Koopa Troopas (Nokoko) adapted from SMB3, I had to shrink them a lot

Princess Toadstool adapted from SMB3, also shrunken :\

Background trees have been shaded

Fences, bricks, hills, and springboards improved

Ground, hard blocks, mystery boxes, and clouds changed to gfx from SMB3

Bowser improved

Various other graphics drawn from scratch by me

Palletes changed to suit the graphics

New in this version:

The sky changed colors when you got hurt in certain night stages. Fixed

Mystery Blocks and coins glow yellow instead of red-orange.

The green Koopa flag with black skull looked icky against the flagpole with
anything but the standard Nesticle palette. I turned it white and green
again, but left the black outline.

The trunks of the tree platforms have been *greatly* improved

Castle blocks changed to match the fortresses from SMB3. Looks great!

Pipes have been fixed

Koopa (Kuppa) Troopas were missing the outline on the back of their head. Fixed.

Super Mario's sprites are now more accurate to SMB3

Water/lava has been outlined, and lowered slightly for better effect

Bowser has been redrawn from *scratch* He looks killer!

Patch now works on both title and no-title version of the ROM _but NOT
with the infamous trainer!_

More detailed documentation. My e-mail address is included at the end.

Nifty ASCII art in this document. (Yes, I made that)

Special thanks go to:

AsTrOcReEp 2000 - for his advice, and his documentation on color editing
Shigeru Miyamoto - without whom Mario would never have existed
Sir Kero - for spending hours to locate the position of the sky colors,
and for remapping a lot of tiles for me. Thanx! ^_^
Skeeve - who helped me figure out the debug in Pasofami long ago
sl1me - for telling me where to find the cycling colors for the [?] boxes
SnowBro - for TileLayer, which I have used for all my hacks after this one
Taichou - maintains the Hacks page on ZD. "one of the best hacks I've seen"
Who could ask for a better compliment? ^_^
