1. What is SSEmu?

SSEmu is an emulator, in that it does its best to turn your
Windows 95 machine into a Sega Saturn(tm). It currently doesn't fully
emulate it yet, but should get more faithful as new versions surface.
SSEmu is short for Sega Saturn Emulator, which is its full name, but I
just use "SSEmu" (I know, real original). As soon as it does some real
useful stuff, like display graphics or something, I'll give it a catchy
name. Until then, SSEmu will have to do.

		-----------------------------------

2. What it Does

SSEmu currently does several things. It has a virtual Saturn
Control Unit (SCU) engine, all three Hitachi processors are partially
emulated, and music is emulated (although not exactly how the Saturn
does it). I am currently trying to find more documentation on the
Motorola 68EC000 and Yamaha FH1 sound processors. The Video Display
processors (VDP's) are currently not implemented due to a lack of
documentation. Certain video modes, such as the 720x576 2D resolution,
will be implemented (hopefully) in the next significant version. Full
faithful emulation would require a 24-bit color capable video card and
an incredibly fast 3D card, like Voodoo (3Dfx). I don't yet own a
3Dfx card, so I'll be shooting in the dark when I get to the 3D engine.
Possible supported chipsets will be ATI 3D, 3Dfx, and (maybe) Rendition.
I want everyone to have a chance to play the Saturn. There will also
most likely be a non-accelerated (basic DirectX and Direct3D) version
of the 2D and 3D engines. However, a DirectDraw and Direct3D card will
accelerate those engines.

3. System Requirements

Minimum:
	DX4/100MHz
	8 MB Ram
	1 MB HD space
	Saturn CD(s)

Recommended:
	Pentium II 266MHz
	32 MB Ram
	1 MB HD space
	Lots o' Saturn CD's

		-----------------------------------

4. What's New?

0.05: The first official release.
No SH-1 or SH-2 emulation code has been included due to the
fact that there is not enough for there to be any use yet.
Music is emulated about as much as it can be for now.
The sound processors are still not emulated though.
And, of course, the video display processors are no where
near emulated. The 720x576 mode is planned for the next
version, but no promises. 2D MUST come before 3D, so that's
the order I'll be doing them.

The Hitachi core is being written in assembly along with basic 2D and
3D engines. It's not an easy thing figuring out the Saturn CD files.
Any input into ANY of the files contained on it will be appreciated.

5. The Interface

After the splash screen goes away, you will see the SSEmu Main
Interface. It consists of a menu bar, two DOS-looking screens, and a
status bar. More interface features will be added as they are needed.

-Menu Bar-

The menu bar consists of 4 main items; File, Options, Plugins, and
Help. File contains the main functions of SSEmu. They include loading
the CD data, unloading it, playing it, resetting it, and exiting the
program. The Options menu contains just that; options. Currently,
none of the options are available. I don't think they are needed yet.
Plugins is a special feature that loads a new window that then looks
for all available plugins. It currently doesn't function because there
would be no need of it. However, a scripting language is already in
the works for when it could be useful. Help includes the main help
file for SSEmu and the about screen. In this version, the main help
file is not present due to the fact that it would not be of any use.

-Status Screens-

Next we go to the two DOS-like screens. Those are the status screens.
The left one basically displays the native-code messages and various
generic messages. The bottom screen is for the Saturn-native commands
and emulated hardware communication. For now, the messages will not
mean anything to the average user. They are really for me right now
so that I can get my notes straight. In fact, for the most part it is
just "simulated" rather than "emulated."

6. Compatibility List

The following list includes those games that I have personally
tested with SSEmu and tells whether they are compatible with SSEmu or
not. I used the original, commercial CDs and I recommend that you use
those as well. Using pirated Saturn games is not only illegal, but it
takes money away from the programmers and the companies that own the
games. With that said, here's the list:

	Name Compatible

	Daytona USA YES
	Virtua Cop YES
	Virtua Cop 2 YES
	Virtua Fighter 2	YES

More games will appear on the list as I go out and rent (or buy) them.
For the latest list, visit the SSEmu web site at the following URL:

If you are using any game other than what is in the list and it fails
to work properly, please email me at: marshallg@zianet.com

7. Copyright

This program, which includes the SSEmu.exe file, its INI file,
and this Readme.txt file, is copyrighted. In other words, you
don't own it, but you can use it. Don't try and sell it. You
probably wouldn't want to anyway (it doesn't do anything spec-
tacular yet). This program is considered FREEWARE, which means
that you can copy it without restriction except that no money
may be received for those copies. Other than that, have fun!
