                           v0.25c FAQ: MS-DOS

What is this?
-------------

This is a list of questions and answers for 90% of the problems people have
with Raine. It is up to date with the latest release of Raine. This was done
so it could be used to help answer the huge number of emails we started getting
recently about Raine. Please spread this to anyone you know who might find it
helpful in running Raine, that way we will get less mail and hopefully message
boards will soon be free of Raine related questions.

The FAQ is now maintained by Mario Silva.

SCREEN PROBLEMS
---------------

Q: When I try to run raine it says: "Unable to open 320x240x8bpp VESA2L
screen. Get Display Doctor 6.0 from www.scitechsoft.com to fix this."

A: Go to www.scitechsoft.com and download and install display doctor. Make
sure you install display doctor correctly and make sure it has correctly
identified your gfx card and monitor. Now try running raine again. If it
still won't work, use the other video modes, like mode-x.

Q: When I try to run raine it says: "Unable to open 640x480x8bpp VESA2L
screen. Get Display Doctor 6.0 from www.scitechsoft.com to fix this."

A: Same as above. There are non-vesa modes in this release and Raine will
attempt to autodetect an available mode. There are also Vga and Mode-x modes
available, try to use raine -v 3 for mode-x support. This is very useful with
   people using laptop computers.

Q: When I run Darius, Darius Extra, Darius 2 (2 or 3 Screens Version),
Ninja Warriors or Warrior Blade, I can't see all the game graphics!!!

A: The arcade game uses 2/3 monitors, so it's really hard to get all of it in
the emulation, but if you run it on a 800x600 resolution you will see most of it.
Also, try 800x600 with half-height scanlines, which will fill the screen nicely.
Or try the new modes like 800x300. Warrior Blade & Darius 2 (2 Screens Version) work
   best at 640x480

MEMORY PROBLEMS
---------------

Q: When I try to run WrestleFest, Kaiser Knuckle or some other games in
raine, I get the message: "Unable to allocate $940000 bytes of memory."

A: You do not have enough memory to run WrestleFest in Windows95 dosbox,
either run it in real dos mode (restart the computer in MS-DOS mode)
or follow this guide to hopefully fix the problem (if not, buy more
   memory):

<this text was mailed to me by Keith Picco!>

   1) From Windows 95, click your start icon and go into Settings then
      go into Taskbar.
   2) From Taskbar select the StartMenu Programs and from there click
      Advanced.
   3) Open the programs folder and click the MS-DOS Prompt icon with
the right-sided button on your mouse. Select properties.
   4) Click the memory tab, go down to MS-DOS protected mode - DPMI
memory. TYPE in 65535. Click apply then exit.

** Before following the 4 steps above, make sure you close all
** MS-DOS prompts that are currently open.

Another alternative is to buy some ram, every excuse is good to upgrade your
  computer. :)

Important:
---------

In Raine you will find that you have the same memory problem with Space Gun & Bubble Memories
and in the future possibly with other games, so to solve this you only have to set the DPMI
 value to 65535.

Q: When I try to run raine, I get the message telling me to get cwsdpmi...

A: This is only needed for playing in pure dos mode. Get the file here:

    http://www.rainemu.com/cwsdpmi.zip

LOADING PROBLEMS
----------------

Q: When I click on raine, it just shows a list of the games, when I try
to press anything, Windows says "This MS-DOS program has terminated..."
How do I make it work?

A: Raine is not a Windows program, you must go to MS-DOS yourself to run
the games. eg. to run WrestleFest, you must open an MS-DOS prompt, then
   type something like:

   C:\> cd games
   C:\games> cd raine
   C:\games\raine> raine -g Wrestlef -v 0

Q: When I try to use raine to play WrestleFest, I get the error: "Unable to
   open WF_15.rom".

A: You have either got the roms in the wrong directory, or you don't have
the roms, or you are not running raine from within it's directory...

Case 1: Roms in wrong directory
   -------------------------------
The roms need to go in a subdirectory called 'WrestleF'. This means
your directory structure should be like this:

C:\games\raine\ (raine.exe needs to be in here)
   C:\games\raine\raine.exe

C:\games\raine\wrestlef\ (all the wrestlefest roms need to be in here)
   C:\games\raine\wrestlef\wf_15.rom

Case 2: You don't have the roms
   -------------------------------
Did you download a large file containing the WrestleFest roms? If you did,
you should unzip them to the 'WrestleF' subdirectory. See Case 1 for info
on where this directory should be... You can find the roms in several
   different places (see links bellow).

Case 3: You have the roms, but the filename is wrong
   ----------------------------------------------------

You have the file and you tried running it in the ziproms directory,
but for some reason it has a different filename than the one needed in
Raine. Just rename it to the proper name.
Ex: ren Wrestle.zip WrestleF.zip (now the filename is right and Raine
should be running it without any problems),

Case 4: You have the roms, but it isn't the one supported by Raine
   ------------------------------------------------------------------

You got a file with the correct name, but Raine refuses to load it and
displays the message: "Unable to open WF_15.rom".
Unzip the file a check if it has a WF_15.rom file, if doesn't have it
then you could have downloaded a different rom than the one required by
   Raine.

Case 5: You have the correct roms, but the zip is corrupted
   -----------------------------------------------------------

You have the correct roms, but Raine refuses to load it and displays
the message: "Unable to open WF_15.rom".
Try unzipping the file or checking it for errors, probably it's corrupted
and that's why Raine can't load the file.

Case 6: You have the correct roms, but some are missing
   ------------------------------------------------------

You have a perfect file, but when loading you still get the message
"Unable to open xxxxxxx.xxx", that can happen when you are trying to load
some games that use other rom files like Darius Extra, P47 American or Whoopee
that load the graphics files from other roms like Darius, P47 Japanese and Pipi & Bibi's.
That could happen also with Tetris Taito Sega that loads Rastan Saga 2 sound roms, also
Rodland Japanese version also needs roms from the English version.

Q: I get the error: "Unsupported game"...

A: You are typing the wrong command. eg. for WrestleFest, you should be typing:

   C:\games\raine> raine -g Wrestlef -v 0

Q: How do I take advantage of Ziprom support? Ziprom loading won't work for me!
Ziprom loading interferes with Zipmagic!! Arghh!!!

A: You can keep all your roms zipped, just put them in the following directory:

   C:\games\raine\ziproms

This option saves you a lot of disk space.

   Zipmagic
   --------

You should disable Zipmagic to use Ziprom support, or you can try this to use
   Zipmagic (courtesy of Steve Merritt):

    1) Place all of the ROM's into their normal directories, NOT the ones in the
'Ziproms' directory as you would for using non-zipped roms.

    2) Now zip the entire Raine directory

e.g. On my machine Raine was located at E:\Arcade Games\Raine\Raine.exe.
Now it is found at E:\Arcade Games\Raine.zip\Raine.exe

Now create a shortcut to Raine.exe inside the zip file, and run as normal.

One thing to note: In the zipmagic properties, click on 'Applications' in
the sidebar, and check that there is not a tick in the box at the bottom
that says 'MS-DOS prompt sees Zip files as files'. Also, of course, this
solution is no good if you drop out of win 9x into a DOS session, but then,
if you load it that way the normal technique will work!

OTHER PROBLEMS
--------------

Q: I see the pictures on the website, I like the games can you send me the roms?

A: Do not email us about this. We will ignore all your emails about this subject.

Q: I have a Cyrix / Old AMD / 486 / Older Intel Pentium series and when I try
to load a game Raine crashes everytime. What is the problem?

A: We have implemented rdtsc for a more accurate frame timer, older processors
don't support it. Edit Raine.cfg file and in the UseRdtsc part put a 0 to
   disable it.

Q: My video card as problems diplaying all the screen on vertical games, but I
really need to see part of the screen.

A: Press P to Pause the current game and use the Up and Down arrow keys to
   adjust the playing area.

Q: How do I know I have the right rom for a game supported in Raine?

A: It's easy just use the command -romcheck <gamename> to check a specific
game or just -romcheck to get a general list of missing, good or bad sets.

Q: Raine runs to fast or too slow!!!

A: You can now choose between automatic or manual frameskip, if you want to do this
manually then make sure you press PG_DOWN or PG_UP during the game to adjust the speed.

A: Some of the more complicated games, like Taito F3 system require faster computers so you
need at least a Cyrix +166 MHZ with 32 MB Ram with the Frameskip set in Automatic to get
a playable speed. Currently almost all the games can be run on a P120 with sound.

A: For extra speed:

   - Disable sound/change sample rate
   - Disable vsync
   - Make sure you use a vesa mode

Q: The sound does not work!!! Some games have sound problems...

A: There is now sound emulation in the majority of the games, but there are games that don't
have sound like the Taito F3 games (this is due to lack of information and emulation about
the Ensonic Otis chip used in this game system).

(*) Please see the complete list of games that don't have sound support
at the end of this FAQ.

Also don't forget to select the soundcard in the Sound Setup menu or you
   will get only silence.

To use the Soundblaster PCI64 soundcard please use option 7 - Ensonic Soundscape.

For the Soundblaster Live soundcards it's better that you run Raine without a frontend.
There are some settings you can make. Basically set it up to use Sounblaster (Option 1),
and make sure you have a blaster enviroment setting in you autoexec.bat.
Then you need to run the Creative sb16 emulation, which again requires a memory manager
to be loaded (emm386.exe for example).

Best solution is to buy a cheap ISA soundblaster compatible. It'll happily
co-exist with your SBLive, as long as you have a free irq & dma to use.

Q: My joystick will not work!!!

A: Joystick support is now implemented, however not all joysticks are yet supported.

For Sidewinders you have two different drivers you can choose, for some the
first works, but for others Sidewinders the Alt driver is required.

Q: I have a problem getting Bubble Memories to run. The ROM set I have loads OK, just when
I go to play, it gives the following error: Push Test Switch, Backup Data Failed.

A: This due to a eeprom being unintialized, it happens sometimes in some of the F3 games
(most common cause is when using the language switches, all F3-games automatically void
reset their eeproms when this is used). To solve this just press the U key and then choose
Exit from the menu. Next time the game starts you will be able to play it.

Q: I have a problem in Arkanoid Returns or Puchi Carat, when the game loads and I try to play
   it I can't control my pad...help!!!!

A: It seems you changes by mistake some eeprom values, it happens sometimes in some of the F3 games.
To solve this just press the U key to go to service mode and then change the menu options in the
configuration to Joystick. Exit from the menu. Next time the game starts you will be able to play it.
Paddle control will soon be added (just need to find time...).

Q: In Twin Qix the background after the first level turns green, is this normal?

Press F8 to disable it. This is due to transparency effects in F3 games (unimplemented).

Q: When I start Rainbow Islands Extra the game seems strange!

A: This is because it had a protected Z80 chip in the original arcade board called a
c-chip used in many Taito games, this can be solved if anybody has a bootleg version of
the game or more info about the chip itself. Bonze's Adventure can now be played until the
last level, but we didn't add yet the last level information to make it fully playable.

Q: Hey...when I insert a "virtual" coin in the games, the keyboard leds blink!
It must be a virus on my PC or worse! Help!!!!

A: Oh...my god! This sounds serious...you have got to reboot your PC and uninstall Raine
to cure this nasty problem...it seems that the Raine author in his free time decided to
emulate the Taito arcade machines leds on your keyboard. This is a "feature"
   not a bug. ;)

Also if you have crashes due to this feature, please use the -noleds option when
starting Raine or edit Raine.cfg file and in the UseLeds part put a 0 to disable it.

******* If your problem is not answered above, mail us about it, but if
******* it is answered and you can't get it working still, tough! I don't
******* have any other solutions, so you'll have to work it out on your own!!
